Fiesta 1
Club event Feb 1st 2009
Sailing took place in near sub-zero temperatures, the wind was a rare easterly direction, and many pondering why they were standing in the cold but for the love of sailing.
The first couple of races were dominated by John Cox, who beat off all challeges and ever changing gusts, but was defeated by battery failure.
Ian Smith retired through the same fate.
Noel Donaldson came the victim of rig failure with his mast snapping at deck level.
Josh King had many a tussel with Mike Robinson as usual, and is still learing the art of persistance and tactics.
Aylesbury @ Oxford Interclub Sailing event.
On the 15th of March OMBC hosted the second interclub event with Aylesbury.
A clear sunny morning entised 17 helmsmen to take part. The wind direction was steady but north by north west, which made for a difficult start line, and an even more challenging windward mark, which was difficult to judge at the best of times with up to 6 boats negotiating position to round it and gain advantage for the downwind run.
After two races the course was shortened into an Olympic standard course and start line reset.
Jet lagged Mike Robinson sailed consistently throughout all races to pin first position. Im suprised he kept his eyes open long enough to see the buoys let alone navigating round them.
Dennis Payne another long haul holiday seeker back from Aus. secured 2nd position despite losing his way on the first race.
On his first IOM sailing event Josh King gained 6th position which I am sure will give him much valued experience in such a sizeable fleet.
Sid Hunt was the first positioned Aylesbury sailor coming in 5th place.
Many thanks to Stewart Wilkins for keeping score and formulating the results sheet.
I hope the Alyesbury visitors had an enyoyable mornings sailing and hope to see them all at our next meeting on the water at Watermead on 14th June 2009.
Results table can bee seen below:
Fiesta Club Event No. 3
On 19th April a turbulent wind gave the 11 Fiesta skippers a challenge to negotiate the race course.
A North by North Easterly made for an unusual start line and gave rise to some skippers tacking immediatly on Port soon after going through the start line and heading for rougher water. Those who stayed on starboard hit mostly still or changeable airs loosing drive and ability to tack.
The ones who got away to make most of the gains were Ian Smith, and Greg King who sailed with consistancy throughout the morning.
Many thanks to Stewart Wilkins who undertook scoring and event duties on the day.
The Fiesta Open will take part on 10th May at Hinksey.
